Population In 2003 the population was estimated at 81.6 million. The population is almost 70% rural and is concentrated in the two main rice-growing deltas: the Red River in the north and the Mekong in the south. Capital City Hanoi. Population approximately 3.5 million.
Language Vietnamese - official language. English very widely spoken. Russian, French, Chinese and a variety of Khmer and Laotian dialects selectively spoken.
Principal Religions Buddhism has the largest following. Catholicism and Cao Daism also have significant followings especially in the South. There are also sizeable Taoist, Confucian, Hoa Hao and Muslim minorities.
Local Currency Vietnamese Dong (VND). Notes are issued in denominations of 200, 500, 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000 and 50,000. The Dong is a non-convertible currency
GDP Growth rate of 7% during 2002.
