Population The population is approximately 25 million.
Capital City Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia is centrally located on the west coast of Peninsula Malaysia with a population of approximately 1.5 million. Kuala Lumpur leads the country's fast paced development in trade and commerce, banking and finance, manufacturing, transportation, information technology and tourism.
Language The official language is Bahasa Malaysia. However, English is very widely spoken especially in business.
Principal Religions Islam is the official religion of Malaysia, but freedom of worship is enshrined in the Constitution and other widely practiced religions Buddhism, Hinduism and Christianity.
Local Currency The Malaysia currency is called Ringgit. As of June 2002, the official exchange rate of the Ringgit to the US Dollar is USD 1 = RM3.80. There are currency restrictions in place and the ringgit is not convertible abroad.
GDP The annual GDP growth for 2002 was 4.2%.
Weights and measurements The metric system is used although the imperial system is understood and may still be occasionally found.
